Education at the Department of Earth Sciences

Within the Earth Sciences and Geography programmes, the Earth is explored- landmasses, oceans and atmosphere, and how we interact with it's resources and the current and possible future consequences are of such behaviours.

The Department of Earth Sciences has a long tradition of educating geologists who are requested in the labor market, and we are continuously working with the development of our programs.

The teaching in Earth Science consists of lectures, tutorials, labs, excursions on land and by sea, as well as project work. We believe it is especially valuable for our students to gain experience in fieldwork.

Courses in Earth Sciences

In the Department of Earth Sciences we offer Bachelor’s degrees in Earth Science and Geography, and it is possible to read parts of our bachelor's programmes in English. Our courses also include ones that are read by students in Bachelor programmes in Biology and Environmental Science and Master's program in Atmospheric Science. Read more about our courses

Master's programmes in Earth Sciences

A specialization in Bedrock Geology, Environmental Geology, Quaternary Geology and Marine Geology occurs at the Master's level. Here students can immerse themselves in a specific field of research and increase their employability.

The focus in climatology is to provide a good knowledge of climate systems, climate change and its impacts, as well as a more specialized knowledge in GIS, data management and modeling.

Postgraduate studies

The over-arching framework for research in the department is the ESS (Earth System Science), or the Earth as a system. Thus, three themes are at the core of most graduate studies; Climate, Marine Science, and Geological Resources and Hazards. Within this framework we currently have about 25 graduate students working in active research.

We have an open seminar, the Earth Science Seminar Series, every Thursday during lunch, in which students have the opportunity to present and discuss their research, as well as to practice their presentation skills with a wider audience. Read more about our postgraduate study opportunities
