Om Anne Hormes

My research expertise is in Quaternary Geology and the application of geochronological techniques used for building high-precision age models for the Late Quaternary and the interpretation of palaeoclimate archives. For my field-based research in Svalbard, European Alps, Swedish Lapland and New Zealand, I have used a variety of tools of Quaternary sedimentology, stratigraphy, remote sensing and geological mapping. My motivation is to test hypotheses on climate forcing mechanisms of glacier variability and geohazards. The quantification of spatial and temporal variability of Late Quaternary environmental change provides important data for Earth system models and to evaluate natural backgrounds for anthropogenic influence.

My research is focused on the following processes in palaeoclimate and environmental change
(a) Holocene glacier variability and potential forcing mechanisms
(b) Configuration and deglaciation of the former marine-based Barents Sea ice sheet, climate forcing mechanisms and its effect on sea level, isostatic uplift
(c) Temporal placement of glacial and interglacial/interstadial deposits, lake sediments and peat deposits in Arctic and Alpine environments by means of radiocarbon and cosmogenic isotope dating
(d) Spatial placement of geohazards such as coastal erosion and rock falls by means of geomorphology and study of forcing mechanisms
(e) Long-term landscape development of high-alpine topography deciphered by multiple cosmogenic isotopes
(f) Temperature, hydro climate and environmental reconstruction of the last 2000 years
(g) Climate-related processes in lake catchments and along coasts

Together with Jostein Bakke, Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, I became co-leader of the PAGES Arctic 2k workgroup. PAGES is a core project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and funded by the U.S. and Swiss National Science Foundations bringing more than 6,000 scientists together in the field of past global changes. The Arctic 2k working group generates and synthesizes high-resolution palaeoclimate data in order to assess the spatiotemporal variations of Arctic climate during the last 2,000 years. The Pages Arctic2k workgroup will focus in the next three years on high-resolution hydroclimate records in addition to adding high-resolution temperature records covering the last 2000 years to the existing database hosted by NOAA.
