About Céline Heuzé

I am docent in climatology and a physical oceanographer fascinated by the global deep water masses. These form in winter in the polar oceans and then circulate all around the world. They help store carbon and heat from the atmosphere to depth, and mix nutrients and oxygen through the water column. Deep water formation is key for fisheries, climate and even sea level rise. But a lot is still unknown.

After a PhD at the University of East Anglia (UK) on the modelling of Antarctic bottom waters, I moved to Sweden and to North Atlantic deep waters. I am particularly interested in how much heat they carry to the Arctic Ocean, and how they interact with the cryosphere. I study this question using in-situ observations, climate models, and ocean remote sensing. Since we always need more in-situ data, I am notably in charge of parts of two upcoming large international Arctic field campaigns:
- co-leader of Team Ocean (=physical oceanography) for the entire year of the MOSAiC expedition;
- physical oceanography PI of the Swedish contribution to the Synoptic Arctic Survey.

I am the supervisor of two PhD students:
- Salar Karam, also at GEO. Project: "Why is the deep Arctic Ocean Warming?". He started in October 2019.
- (co-supervisor) Martin Mohrmann, from Marine sciences; main supervisor: Sebastiaan Swart. Project: "The Weddell Polynya: climate beast or just another hole in the ice?". He started in January 2018.

+ past student Wiebke Aldenhoff from Chalmers University of Technology; project: "Radar remote sensing of sea ice". She finished in March 2020 and now works for the German Ice Service (BSH).

I am also the supervisor of one postdoctoral researcher, Adriano Lemos.

I moved to the Earth Sciences department in October 2018 where I am Assistant Professor / senior lecturer in climatology and teach the following courses:
- Introduction to Earth Sciences (GV1410; I am course responsible for half of it), 1st year bachelor;
- Earth system science (GV0340), 3rd year bachelor;
- Climate Modelling (GVN465; I am course responsible), master level;
- The Arctic in a changing climate, PhD level.

Otherwise, I enjoy going at sea or to conferences, and I do quite some outreach:
- I am a regular author for the European Geophysical Union (EGU) blog;
- I am in contact with the Swedish and international press, and even the French TV;
- I occasionally go to science centres to do some demos in Swenglish.

Contact me for more information on any of these points. Or check my personal website.
