About Heather Reese

My primary research interest is the remote sensing of alpine vegetation types, change detection of alpine vegetation, and the mapping of other land cover types (eg., tree species). My approaches often use multiple data sources which are primarily spectral data from satellites such as Sentinel-2 or Landsat, but also 3D data from LiDAR and photogrammetry. I often work with large area operational projects and cooperate with government agencies and consulting companies in aspects of method development. My future interests are to apply multi-scale remote sensing and spatial modelling to better determine changes (climate and other agents) in alpine/sub-alpine and arctic/sub-arctic ecosystems.

Current research projects include:

• Multi-temporal classification of Sentinel-2 satellite data for alpine vegetation and tree species in Sweden (Financer: Swedish National Space Board)

• Operational mapping of alpine vegetation types in the new National Land Cover Map (Financer: Swedish Environmental Protection Agency)

• Using optical and radar satellite data to answer questions on the interrelated roles of trees, soil moisture and crop condition for food security in Burkina Faso (Financer: Swedish National Space Board)

• Method development for operational mapping of shrubification of agricultural land (Financer: Agricultural Board)

• Modelling ground lichen coverage from optical satellite data and LiDAR data (Financer: Formas)

• Model-assisted estimates of ecosystem services using remote sensing data (Financer: Swedish National Space Board)

• Visualization based on small scale digital aerial photography (Financer: SLU)
