Welcome to the Gothenburg University Laboratory for Dendrochronology (GULD)

GULDThe Gothenburg University Laboratory for Dendrochronology (GULD), located at the Faculty of Science, Department of Earth Sciences, is a fully equipped laboratory for tree-ring research, focusing on reconstructing regional climate variability over the last millennia and investigating the long-term evolution and variability of the large-scale circulation in the atmosphere and oceans. We also develop and explore dendroclimatological analyses techniques, such as new standardisation methods and Blue Intensity. We utilize tree-ring data in ecological and forest fire studies as well as in archaeological studies. Our research our research is mainly focused on Sweden, but we conduct research on 5 continents (see projects).

GULD group pictureGULD was founded in 2003 by Hans Linderholm and is closely linked with the Regional Climate Group (RCG), and many projects aim at combining the knowledge from RCG and GULD, e.g. through studies of circulation patterns from observations and proxies or utilizing climate models and tree-ring data in paleoclimate research. Nationally, we collaborate with researchers from Stockholm and Lund Universities, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Internationally, GULD is a partner of the Sino-Swedish Centre for Tree-Ring Research (SISTRR), and collaborate with leading scientists and institutes from China, Chile, Egypt, Germany, Kirgizstan, Korea, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, USA, Uzbekistan and Tanzania.

GULD provides good laboratory facilities, and through collaboration with researchers at the Universities of Stockholm and Swansea, we analyse most proxies from tree rings (ring widths, blue, density and stable isotopes). Of the two GULD laboratories, one is dedicated to teaching, and is frequently used in many undergraduate and graduate courses in Earth Sciences, especially in the international Bachelor Programme in Climatology.
