Om Heather Reese

My primary research interest is in remote sensing of subarctic alpine vegetation types and changes in the vegetation of these areas. I combine multiple data sources such as optical data from Sentinel-2 or Landsat, but also incorporate 3D data from LiDAR or photogrammetry. Connecting information at different spatial scales is a challenge, where data from drones and satellite platforms need to be carefully correlated. I fly drones at my research sites with near-infrared and thermal-infrared cameras, and have contributed to a number of cross-disciplinary research projects.

I often work with large area operational projects and cooperate with government agencies and consulting companies in aspects of method development.  My future interests are to apply multi-scale remote sensing and spatial modelling to better determine changes (climate and other agents) in alpine, sub-arctic ecosystems.

On-going research projects include:

• Multi-temporal classification of Sentinel-2 satellite data for alpine vegetation and tree species using Hidden Markov Models (Financer: Swedish National Space Board)

• Operational mapping of alpine vegetation types in the new National Land Cover Map (Financer: Swedish Environmental Protection Agency)

• UAV photogrammetry for monitoring palsa degradation

• Using optical and radar satellite data to answer questions on the interrelated roles of trees, soil moisture and crop condition for food security in Burkina Faso (Financer: Swedish National Space Board)

• Improving model performance with high spatial-resolution albedo estimates (Financer: MERGE at GU)
